From its inception in 1931 by an American Actor/Entrepreneur to full Winnipeg ownership, the Salisbury House story has it all: dreams, history, celebrity and soul…all served up with good humour and grilled onions.

The House with the “Little Red Roof” was the vision of Ralph Erwin, who was an actor in a traveling road company. Erwin recognized the need for a place where people could get good food in a friendly, pleasant atmosphere at any time of the day or night.

Since opening the first site on Fort Street with $135.00 borrowed from friends in Nebraska, Erwin’s original Salisbury House has grown into more than 20 locations in Winnipeg. Erwin chose the name of Salisbury House after Lord Salisbury, who was famous in England for his love of ground steak, among other things. The hamburger craze, at that time, had just begun to sweep the United States with its popularity. Erwin introduced the new hamburger concept to Winnipeg at his new location and called it a “Nip”, indicating a smaller amount of the famous Salisbury Steak. Erwin didn’t realize what an entrepreneur he truly was when he also brought Silex Coffee to his Salisbury House. Silex Coffee was also previously unknown to Winnipeg and indeed to Canada. He also introduced drive-in “car-hop” service. Salisbury House, as you can see, has never been a stranger to innovation.

The House Under the Little Red Roof was now open for business with Nips, Silex Coffee, breakfasts and homemade pies. Today, our now famous Nips, served on our freshly baked buns with our tasty grilled onions, continue to anchor our full menu along with our wonderful all day Breakfasts, delicious Lunches, Snacks and Dinners. All of this is augmented by our outstanding Sweet Potato Fries, our luscious Wafer Pie, Chocolate Iced Donuts, Red Velvet Cake and many other, Classic items with their Legendary Taste.

After eight decades Sals continues to pioneer the industry, as we became one of the first restaurants to offer TRANS-FAT FREE foods, allowing the company to offer healthier alternatives without compromising our same Legendary Taste.
